Call to Order, Welcome, and Acknowledgement

Meeting called to order at 5:34 PM PST.

We respectfully acknowledge that we are grateful to live, work, and play within the beautiful ancestral, traditional, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan people, Secwepemc Nation, and acknowledge the Métis people who reside here.

Principal’s Report

Principal – Val Edgell

  • April 7th Pro-D day: math workshop for teachers; focus on ‘new math’ and keeping kids thinking across all classes.
  • Math and writing remain school goals. Grade 4/5 using “math intervention / math facts” preview model.
  • Working on structuring written language and encouraging parents to help with writing at home.
  • Created a “Provincial Standard” poster to go up in the main stairwell for student goal-setting. AES is top in reading.
  • Grade 3 swimming lessons: last week of May and first week of June.
  • Grade 5 Grad: June 20
  • Year-end Fun Day: June 24
  • Three staff members currently on leave; their absence is felt.
  • Reminder to register kindergarten students.
  • Classroom placements begin soon; placements consider teaching style, learning needs, class makeup. Some straight-grade classes possible next year.

Fencing was $65.78 over budget.

$23,000 previously approved for fencing. Tammie motioned to issue:

Old Business

Grade 5 Grad

  • Sleepover planned for June 12, 2025 (BBQ, activities, movie).
  • 42 students total. Survey: 28 yes to sleepover, 7 leave at night, 1 no.
  • 6 parent organizers; overnight volunteers: 2 dads, 4 moms.
  • Rule list for students in progress.
  • Backdrop fabric needed (frame exists); will check budget and revisit next meeting.

Fundraising Update

  • Freezie Friday started before spring break. Sold out second Friday, now fully stocked.
  • Jordi pursuing donation from Wholesale Club. Working on request letter; expecting a gift card.
  • Line Dance Fundraiser (April 22):
  • Few sign-ups so far. Need more to cover instructor.
  • Kids can join. Aislinn to post reminders. $20/ticket, pay at the door.

AES Garden

Build Day Work Party: Saturday, April 12, 9 AM to 5 PM

  • Volunteers managed by Nanae Phung.
  • She Shed: 20 volunteers arriving 8 AM.
  • Askews providing food.
  • Tents from Shepards; tools from Sunbelt.
  • Media expected: Castanet, Global Okanagan, Morning Star.
  • Kid activity area run by Nadine and Pia (rock painting); parents responsible for supervision.
  • Kyla (AES secretary) asked to email parents to participate

Mary Jane motioned $500 for coffee, pizza, any day of construction supplies from hardware store

  • Discussion of combining thank-you and Garden Opening Celebration with Spring Festival – TBD.
  • Roxanne to coordinate summer maintenance, get sign ups at Garden Opening Celebration.
  • Discussion of planning of Garden Opening Celebration organized by parents Nadine, Heidi, Jennell

Mary Jane motioned to spend $650.05 (West Coast Seeds fundraiser) on garden opening celebration:
